Wrap a plain GI sheet at least a foot wide around the trunk of the tree, preferably midway from the ground to the tree crown. Keep the metal band free from any "bridge" that gives the rat access to go to the tree top. The idea is that the rat can't get across the band and feed on the young nuts and even build its nest at axils of the leaves. One modification is to wrap the GI sheet like a woman skirt.  This provides a more difficult access for this rodent pest to get across. AVR
