Art Exercise: Countless attempts have been made by artists and non-artists all over the world to reconstruct the missing arms of Venus de Milo. Some examples are shown in these photos.

Which version is closest to the imagined positions of the missing arms? Try your own version. Draw on a piece of paper. As a group exercise, encourage discussion as part of a workshop.

Front and back views of the statue greatly help the artist in reconstructing the arms.

Here are some versions of the reconstructed arms as sourced from the Internet.  Use these as a guide.

Discussion:

  1. What is the concept of beauty?
  2. Why is Venus de Milo regarded as the "most perfect" sculptural work, as Parthenon of Athen the "most perfect architectural" work?  What is the basis?
  3. Does completeness enhance beauty, as in this the case of Venus de Milo?  Explain.
  4. What is the relevance of this exercise to you? To Humanities?
  5. Would you rather leave Venus de Milo in her original state without arms? Support your answer. ~
